On August 25th, I took a day trip to explore Zhongshan, a city where modern urban life seamlessly blends with rich Lingnan culture and storied architecture.
Strolling along the Qijiang River, the contrast between the tranquil waterway, the iconic Qijiang Bridge, and the modern city skyline across the water immediately set a relaxing tone for the day. Walking deeper into the historic districts like Sunwen West Road Pedestrian Street, the distinctive arcade buildings and pastel-toned heritage sites—including the Xiangshan Commercial Culture Museum—brought the region's deep entrepreneurial history alive. The colorful cultural posters along the facades, celebrating local traditions like Shiqi Dragon Boat racing and Yatkou Piaose, added even more vibrant character to the streetscape.
Of course, no visit to Zhongshan is complete without diving into its renowned food culture. I made sure to indulge in an authentic local feast: the signature Shiqi roast pigeon with its irresistibly crisp skin and tender meat, delicately seasoned steamed fish, vibrant seasonal greens, and a comforting spread of Cantonese dim sum and handmade meatballs.
It was a rewarding day filled with architectural charm, cultural discovery, and unforgettable flavors—a city that truly deserves a spot on any Lingnan travel itinerary.
